ABOUT CRIME CHANNEL

  • CrimeChannel.org is a treasure trove of nonpartisan public opinion polling on crime, law enforcement and criminal justice issues. It is funded by Evan F. Trestman Philanthropies. Evan F. Trestman––an attorney, investor and civic leader––chairs CrimeChannel.org. He has brought together a group of nationally respected researchers to explore public perceptions about crime and related issues. Trestman, who resides in New Orleans and Aspen, has a personal reason for focusing on the crime issue. Both his father, a former U.S. Navy ship commander, and his grandfather, a neighborhood shopkeeper, were murdered 20 years apart. These tragedies changed his life, and now he wants to give all Americans––liberals, moderates and conservatives, public leaders and average voters––a voice in the criminal justice process by exploring their views and beliefs through in-depth surveys.

What do Americans think about crime, its causes and consequences? What are their perceptions of the workings of the entire criminal justice system? What can be done to strengthen justice and the professionalism of law enforcement?

The 2024 CrimeChannel.org annual national survey is based on a representative sample of 2,000 American adults. It provides an important public opinion benchmark that can be used for years to come. Follow-up surveys in the future will measure changes in public opinion, to identify trends and emerging issues.

America needs to understand the crime problem and how it fits into national priorities at the federal, state and local levels. The CrimeChannel.org national survey is made public to enhance available information for legislators, government executives, police chiefs, district attorneys, judges, academics and average citizens.
